Everyone in the community needs to practice good hygiene to protect themselves and others. When using shared cars, follow the recommended precautions such as washing your hands before and after driving, avoid touching your face and dispose of tissues hygienically. Clean surfaces before and after you drive, using a cleaner that won't damage the car's interior. Do not use shared cars if you are unwell or required to self-isolate.
We’re aware that members of our community may have questions or concerns about what to do in response to COVID-19 when it comes to sharing cars.
General health precautions
As you go about your day, if you’re touching various objects and surfaces that other people have been in contact with - including a car that others have used - follow the hygiene precautions that the Australian Government recommends:
- clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water, at regular intervals and before and after driving;
- don't leave any tissues or other rubbish in the car - if you find any, use disposable gloves or a plastic bag around your hand to pick it up, and wash your hands afterwards; and
- avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
Clean high-touch surfaces before and after you drive
As a neighbour-to-neighbour car-sharing community, we rely on each person taking personal responsibility for cleaning to protect themselves and others.
You should bring your own disinfectant wipes, alcohols spray or a household disinfectant solution to clean the high-touch surfaces before and after you drive:
- key and lockbox
- door handles
- steering wheel
- window controls
- gear stick
- any buttons or touch screens
- wiper and turn signal stalks
- passenger and driver door armrests
- seat adjusters
Do not use bleach or hydrogen peroxide on the inside of a car. While they can both kill coronaviruses on surfaces, they will damage the car’s upholstery. And do not use ammonia-based cleaners on car touch screens, as they can damage their anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings.

Don't use shared cars if you are unwell or should self-isolate
If you’re feeling unwell and there’s a chance that you may have the virus, don’t use other members’ cars.
Even if you are feeling fine, you must not use a shared car if you have travelled overseas in the past 14 days, have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 or are required to self-isolate for any other reason.
If you have a trip booked and need to cancel for this reason, you won't be charged for the cancelled trip. Please select 'other' as the reason when you cancel, and explain your situation.

What if there’s a confirmed case of coronavirus in the Car Next Door community?
If we learn that someone who was infectious has used your car, we will notify you and any other members who have used the car, and make it unavailable for bookings for 10 days or until it’s cleaned.
How will this affect bookings?
If you're a car owner, it’s unclear at this stage what impact this will have on your car’s bookings. While we may see a reduction in the number of people doing non-essential travel and tourists visiting Australia, there may also be more demand for personal transport if people choose to avoid public transport. While we have not seen a drop-off in trips booked, we will keep an eye on the situation over the coming weeks.
