What to do if you get a fine incurred by a Borrower

Short answer:

If you receive a parking fine, speeding fine or other traffic infringement notice that you believe is a Borrower’s responsibility, do not make payment.

Take a photo or scan of the fine notice it and upload it via the Help Centre

How to submit a fine to Car Next Door

  1. Log into your account and click 'Help' in the top menu
  2. Select the car the fine occurred in and click 'Get help with this car'
  3. Find the booking the fine occurred in and click 'Get help with this booking', or select 'I'm not sure when it happened' if you don't know which booking is responsible.
  4. Select the type of fine: 'Illegal parking or parking fines', or 'Speeding or traffic fines'
  5. Upload the scan or photo of the fine to the form
  6. Click Submit

We will check who had your car at the time and send you their details in an official "Note to Transfer" so that you can instruct the issuing agency to reassign the fine (and any associated demerit points) to them.

You will be paid $30 to compensate you for the time you spend dealing with the fine.

How to transfer a fine to the responsible Borrower

The instructions for transferring a fine to another driver are usually set out on the fine notice. You should follow those instructions.

You will need:

  • a copy of the fine or penalty notice
  • the Note to Transfer, containing the Borrower’s name, address, date of birth, driver licence number and state or country of issue. We will email this to you after you send us a picture or scan of the fine.

In NSW and Victoria, you can transfer certain fines using an online service.

If you're in Victoria and the Borrower has an international driver licence, you will not be able to transfer the fine to them online. You will need to complete a statutory declaration or nomination form and submit it by post, together with a copy of the Note to Transfer that we will email to you. It is important that you send the Note to Transfer, as it contains the Borrower's passport number.

Don’t delay. You should take action to transfer the fine promptly, before the due date. If a late payment fee is added to the fine, you will need to pay the late fee.

State by state instructions

Instructions for transferring a fine - Victoria

The processes below do not apply to parking fines that are issued by a local council. Each council has its own forms and process. Check the fine notice for instructions on how to transfer the fine.

How to nominate online (if the Borrower has an Australian licence):

  1. Visit the Fines Victoria Nominate Website
  2. Follow the online prompts to nominate the responsible driver, using the Borrower’s details we sent to you in the Note to Transfer
  3. Retain proof that you have completed the nomination, such as a receipt number or screenshot of the successful submission

How to nominate by post (if the Borrower has an international licence):

  1. Download the Fines Victoria Nomination Statement
  2. Complete the form using the Borrower’s details we sent you in the Note to Transfer
  3. Take a picture of the Nomination Statement for your records
  4. Post the completed, witnessed Nomination Statement together with the Note to Transfer to the address on the Nomination Statement.

You must nominate the responsible driver within 28 days of the issue date if the fine is for an excessive speed, drink driving or drug driving offence, or otherwise, before the due date.

If the fine reaches the Notice of Final Demand or Enforcement Warrant stage of the fines lifecycle, you can no longer nominate another driver. You may be able to request a review from Fines Victoria within the 7-day notice period.

Instructions for transferring a fine - New South Wales
  1. Visit NSW Nomination Website
  2. Follow the online prompts to nominate the responsible driver, using the Borrower’s details we sent to you in the Note to Transfer
  3. Retain proof that you have completed the nomination, such as a receipt number or screenshot of the successful submission.

You must nominate the responsible driver before the due date of the fine. If you don't nominate the person or nominate them by the due date you may receive a fine for failure to nominate. If the due date has passed you can request a review.

Instructions for transferring a fine - Queensland

There is no online nomination service in Queensland, so you will need to complete a statutory declaration and post it.

  1. Download the statutory declaration form
  2. Complete the statutory declaration using the Borrower’s details that we provided in the Note to Transfer.
  3. Have the statutory declaration witnessed by a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations, notary public or Australian legal practitioner (find a JP or CfD)
  4. Take a picture of the statutory declaration and infringement notice for your records
  5. Post the statutory declaration together with your infringement notice and a copy of the Note to Transfer:
  • For police officer or transport inspector issued infringement notices, to: Department of Transport and Main Roads, PO Box 673, FORTITUDE VALLEY QLD 4006
  • For camera detected offences (speed or red light camera offences) to: Queensland Police Service, Traffic Camera Office, GPO Box 1440, BRISBANE QLD 4001

You must nominate the responsible driver within 28 days of the date of the infringement notice. If you do not act before the due date you may need to dispute the fine (infringement fines only) in court to have it transferred to the responsible driver

Instructions for transferring a fine - Western Australia

  3. Have the statutory declaration witnessed by a Commissioner for Declarations
  4. Take a picture of the statutory declaration and infringement notice for your records
  5. Post the statutory declaration together with your infringement notice and a copy of the Note to Transfer to:

You must nominate the driver responsible for the fine within 28 days of the date of issue on the infringement notice.

If you are asked to provide more information, forward the request to Car Next Door. We will provide further evidence of the responsible party to the issuing authority directly.

Making a statutory declaration while overseas

If you are currently overseas, you'll be able to find an authorised witness at your nearest Australian Embassy, high commission or consulate but there are other ways we can help too.

For fines incurred in Victoria or New South Wales, you don't need to make a statutory declaration, just follow the instructions on the fine to nominate the responsible Borrower and be sure to submit the note to transfer we sent you.

  • Hi Remy, when you go to the Help Centre, you select the car involved, and then the borrower/trip involved (if you know it) and then you're given the range of issues to choose from, including "Speeding or traffic fines". I'll update the article to add some clarity!

  • Clicking help doesn't take you to the screen where you can log a ticket. Searching log a ticket doesn't seem to work either. Its a never ending loop of help and 'how to transfer the fine'!

  • Hi Natalie, it should take you to a screen where you can select the trip that the fine occurred in, or if you're not sure which trip it was, select "Get help with this car" instead, and you'll be given the different options available, including "Speeding or traffic fines".
