Will I need to pay a deposit or card pre-authorisation when I book a car?

Short answer:

You won't need to pay a deposit, but instead we will put a 7-day hold on your card. (That's a 'pre-authorisation' in bank-speak).

We will place a $250 hold two times only.

Each pre-authorisation lasts for 7 days. Any trips that you take during those two 7-day periods will be covered by the same pre-authorisation.

For example:
  • Two trips, spaced several weeks apart: You book a trip. We take a $250 pre-authorisation and return it 7 days later. Two weeks later, you book a second trip. Again, we take a $250 pre-authorisation and return it 7 days later. After this, you will not have a pre-authorisation for any future trips.
  • Two trips in one week: You book a trip. We take a $250 pre-authorisation. Four days later, while the pre-authorisation is still in place, you book another trip. It is covered by the same pre-authorsiation. The pre-authorisation is released 7 days after it was placed - the extra trip does not extend the duration. A month later, you book a third trip. We take a $250 pre-authorisation and return it 7 days later. After this, you will not have a pre-authorisation for any future trips.

The $250 is set aside (essentially frozen in your account) by your card provider, but your account will not be debited until the final payment for your trip is processed - usually overnight after your trip ends.

The pre-authorisation ensures that there will be funds on your card to pay for the booking, including any damage, fees, fines or tolls we get notice of after your booking ends.
