Short answer:

The car's Owner pays for all the fuel that goes into the car. They are then reimbursed for every kilometre the Borrowers drive through their chosen distance income.

Borrowers pay for the fuel they use through the distance charge.

Whoever is driving the car needs to make sure they leave it with at least a quarter tank of fuel - whether that's the car Owner or a Borrower.

If a Borrower needs to fill up during their trip, they pay with their own money and upload a receipt for reimbursement. The amount they spent on fuel will be deducted from the final charge for the trip.

Any fuel the Borrower purchases during a trip is charged to the Owner in their monthly invoice, and offset by the distance income.

The pay-and-refund system:

  • Provides more transparency – Owners can see every fuel receipt as it’s uploaded by a Borrower and let us know if they notice any issues
  • Gives us more oversight – we’ll check every receipt to make sure the Borrower has purchased the right type and quantity of fuel
  • Reduces out-of-pocket costs for Borrowers - any amounts Borrowers spend on fuel will be deducted from their trip charge so they aren't out of pocket while they wait for us to process the refund

  • FYI I recently picked up a car that had exactly 1/4 tank of fuel, which meant I *had* to fill up during my journey or I would have returned the car with too little fuel. Unfortunately there were no petrol stations on my way, so I had to drive 2km in the wrong direction and 2km back in order to refuel. Since I was charged for this I contacted Car Next Door who said they cannot refund me for this extra travel, so it ended up costing me extra to top up the tank. They did at least give me a $5 voucher to compensate me for my time so it worked out fine, but just beware that if you pick up a car that someone else has left low on fuel, you may have to pay for the journey to the petrol station to top it up again!

  • WARNING - You will not be reimbursed if you do not provide a receipt. No considerations will be accepted.

Do not trust CND to do the right thing. The people at higher management are very VERY unethical. They don’t care for your circumstances or your hard earned money.

I just hope no one else goes out of pocket because CND’s management cannot make the right decisions.

    NEVER USING CND EVER AGAIN!

  • Hi Vigneshwar, we need a tax invoice to process fuel refunds so we can confirm all the details of the transaction. I'm really sorry that this means we weren't able to process your refund. We do our best to communicate the requirement for a tax invoice in the app during your trip and in our Help Centre and other communications. If there's any way we could've communicated this better, please let us know so we can improve our instructions.

  • I find this absurd. 2nd last car I tried to borrow wasn’t working but still listed. I’ve since borrowed this one, had less than 1/4 tank. Drove down highway and back 134km and consequently they want me to pay extra $30 fee for fuel! What a rip off.

  • Hi David, I'm sorry you found the car with less than 1/4 tank of fuel. If you find a car with low fuel you can take a photo of the gauge and report it to us to be compensated for the hassle - just hit 'Get help'. The $30 we've charged you is because you returned the car with less than 1/4 tank. We do ask that all members return the cars with at least 1/4 tank so that they're ready for the next driver. I'm sorry this wasn't done for you, but it's still your responsibility to leave it with 1/4 tank. I can see you've got an open ticket about this so we'll be in touch with you there.

  • The fuel policy in general is a fair system and I cannot understand why one would complain if they had to re-fuel outside of their intended travel journey if they had to detour by a few kilometres surely??

  • As an owner of a vehicle on CND, how can I be sure that the fuel is being put into my vehicle, not a receipt for fuel that has been put into another vehicle but being reimbursed out of my account? Are there checks in place to verify the vehicle the fuel has gone into? I am curious  about some receipts for fuel but low kms driven.

  • Hi Dianne, we verify that the purchase matches the trip times, fuel type and octane. We can also verify that the car was located at the fuel station at the time of refilling. If you have any reason to believe a fuel receipt may be fraudulent or doesn't belong to your car, please let us know, and we'll investigate it.

  • Hi Luz, I'm sorry that we could not refund your fuel purchase without a tax invoice. Our app instructs you to get an itemised tax invoice when purchasing fuel. We pass fuel costs to the car owner, so we need invoices that detail the fuel type, quantity, and total fuel cost. The instructions for refuelling are also available in our Help Centre:
